Timber fencing built by qualified carpenters

A timber fence is a small structure, and it behaves like one. Posts carry load, rails span between them, and every cut and fixing either adds to the life of the fence or takes away from it. That is why our timber work is done by qualified carpenters rather than treated as unskilled labour — the difference shows up three years later when the fence is still square instead of leaning.

In practice that means posts set at the right depth and spacing for the height of the fence, rails fixed rather than skew-nailed as an afterthought, palings gapped consistently, and cuts kept straight and sealed where it matters. It is not complicated work, but it is easy to do badly and expensive to do twice.

Treated pine, hardwood and the styles we build

Treated pine paling is the most requested option in Geelong. It is cost-effective, readily available and, once it silvers off, blends into almost any backyard. Hardwood costs more up front but is denser, holds a straighter line and suits exposed sites and feature fences where appearance is doing more of the work.

Beyond a standard paling fence we regularly build lapped and capped fences for a more finished look, horizontal slat and screening fences for front boundaries and courtyards, picket fencing for period homes, and custom timber gates to match any of them. We can also combine timber with steel posts where longevity matters more than the look of the post.

  • Paling fences

Standard, lapped or lapped-and-capped in treated pine or hardwood.

  • Feature and slat fencing

Horizontal screening and front-boundary fencing where appearance matters.

  • Picket fencing

Traditional profiles suited to older Geelong and Bellarine homes.

  • Custom timber gates

Made to measure and hung with quality hardware so they do not drop.

Looking after a timber fence in the Geelong climate

Timber moves. Hot dry summers followed by wet, windy winters will shrink and swell palings, and that is normal rather than a fault. Building with correctly seasoned material, consistent gapping and fixings that allow for movement is what keeps a fence looking tidy through those cycles.

If you want a timber fence to stay dark and rich rather than silvering off, plan on oiling or staining it. The first coat is best applied once the timber has dried out and settled, then topped up every couple of years. If you are happy for it to weather naturally, no maintenance is required beyond keeping soil and garden beds from banking up against the base.

Ground contact is the single biggest factor in how long a fence lasts. Where a garden bed, lawn edge or fall in the ground pushes soil against the palings, we will suggest a plinth board or a low retaining sleeper so the structural timber is not sitting in wet dirt year round.

What happens after you enquire

Tell us the suburb, the approximate length and what you are trying to achieve. We will book a site visit, measure properly, check the fall and the access, and give you a written quote that separates out removal, disposal, gates and any retaining work so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

If the fence is on a shared boundary, we will give you a quote you can hand straight to your neighbour. If timelines are tight, tell us at the start — we would rather be honest about when we can realistically start than take a booking we cannot hold.

Timber Fencing — common questions

How long does a timber paling fence last?
It depends on the timber, the exposure and how much moisture sits around the base. Correctly installed treated pine with concreted posts and no soil banked against it will comfortably outlast a fence built with shallow posts and palings touching the ground. We build to avoid the failure points.
Should I choose treated pine or hardwood?
Treated pine is the value option and suits most standard backyard boundaries. Hardwood costs more but is denser, straighter and better suited to feature fences, exposed sites and anywhere the fence is a visible part of the front of the house.
Can you use steel posts with timber palings?
Yes, and it is a common request. Steel posts remove the most common rot point while keeping the timber look on the face of the fence. We will price both options if you are unsure which way to go.
Do I need to stain or oil the fence?
Only if you want it to stay dark. Left alone, timber weathers to a silver-grey and remains structurally sound. If you prefer a finish, wait until the timber has dried out before the first coat and expect to refresh it every couple of years.
